Wieskirche (Wies Church) – The Pilgrimage Church of the Scourged Saviour at Wies – in Steingaden
The Wies Church is one of the most famous Rococo churches in the world. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. The centre of this church is the figure of the suffering Christ, the Scourged Saviour.
On 14 June 1738, Maria Lory, a farmer’s wife, saw tears in the eyes of a figure representing Jesus suffering at the scourging column. This miracle was the start for the pilgrimage to the Scourged Saviour at Wies near Steingaden. To this end, a unique church was built at the site by Dominikus Zimmermann from 1745 to 1754. The church is a perfect example of Rococo architecture. It receives around 1 million visitors a year from all over the world, including many pilgrims.
They come to the Wies Church to look, marvel, pray, attend mass, listen to one of the concerts during the summer and, of course, simply to enjoy a quiet moment and to worship God in the form of the Scourged Saviour.
