We are in Hohenschwangau, part of the Schwangau village near Füssen in the Allgäu.
And in addition to the fantastic castles, there is plenty more to discover here – right on the Romantic Road, you can expect impressive mountains, idyllic lakes and an extraordinary landscape and location. All this contributes to the special attraction of this Bavarian district. And it is all topped off by a healthy climate – and fairly quickly after arriving, newcomers will realise why the cows here really are happier, the people smile more readily and so many guests return.
Beginners and experienced hikers alike can choose from a wide range of different routes in the valley or in the mountains. Watersports enthusiasts will find every opportunity to sail or surf, for example at the nearby Forggensee. Cyclists can combine a ride with sightseeing, with popular destinations including the pilgrimage church of St. Coloman and the excavations of the Roman baths (Römervilla) at the bottom station of the Tegelberg lift.
Experienced mountain and road cyclists can undertake challenging rides to a charming Alpine hut or to neighbouring Tyrol. And in winter, the pistes and cross-country routes in Schwangau provide excellent conditions for downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding and sledging. Children will also find plenty to do in Schwangau, including an adventure playground at the foot of Tegelberg, trips to the Forest Centre, horse riding, trips to farms and many other leisure activities.
