Recommended routes
You can’t really get a feel for the Allgäu in just one trip – it’s far too diverse for that. We’ve put together three routes for you.
Cultural Alpine Route: Royal Romanticism & Baroque Splendour
approx. 110 km | journey time approx. 2 hours (excluding stops)
This route takes you past the cultural highlights of the German Alpine Road – from a UNESCO World Heritage Site to Baroque monuments and a royal castle, all set against a majestic mountain backdrop.
From Hohenschwangau, the picturesque route leads through the Ostallgäu to Steingaden, where the snow-white Wieskirche – a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Germany’s most significant Baroque monument – impresses with its gilded details and ornate frescoes.
Onwards to Oberammergau: this charming artists’ village, with its world-famous Lüftlmalerei (facade murals) and historic market square, is perfect for a leisurely stroll. In Ettal, the imposing Benedictine monastery has stood since 1330 – where Baroque architecture meets the centuries-old brewing tradition of the monastery brewery.
The highlight of the route is Linderhof Palace – the only palace completed by King Ludwig II, featuring magnificent rooms, water features and romantic grottoes. The return journey offers magnificent panoramic views of the Zugspitze region.
Lunch recommendation: Ettal Abbey Brewery – Bavarian cuisine with over 400 years of brewing tradition.

Allgäu Tour: Antiquity, Mountains & Thrilling Bends
This route combines ancient Roman history with legendary driving pleasure – from the Roman town of Cambodunum, through alpine natural beauty, to Germany’s most winding mountain pass.
From Hohenschwangau, the tour first takes you to Kempten, Germany’s second-oldest town. The Cambodunum Archaeological Museum and the adjacent Archaeological Park offer fascinating insights into a 2,000-year-old Roman town. The Baroque old town, with its imposing St Lorenz Basilica and historic market hall, rounds off your visit to the town.
The journey continues into the Oberallgäu mountains to Bad Hindelang – and from there to the highlight of the tour: the Oberjoch Pass road, Germany’s most winding road with 106 bends over 9.3 kilometres. The Kanzel viewpoint offers breathtaking panoramic views over the Ostrach Valley before you reach the top of the pass at 1,178 metres – right on the border with the Tannheimer Valley. The return journey to Hohenschwangau is a leisurely drive with constant views of the Allgäu mountains.
Lunch recommendation: Authentic Allgäu cuisine in Kempten – for example, at the brewery restaurant Zum Stift or at Restaurant Schalander, serving cheese spaetzle, Maultaschen and local sausages.
A leisurely drive along the German Alpine Road: lakes, mountains & enjoyment

This route takes you through the wild and romantic landscapes of the German Alpine Road – past crystal-clear lakes, majestic mountain panoramas and traditional Bavarian destinations renowned for their culinary delights.
From Hohenschwangau, the first stop is Steingaden, where the snow-white Wieskirche – a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Germany’s most significant Baroque monument – invites you to pause and reflect. The journey continues to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the legendary gateway to the Zugspitze region, where alpine tradition and mountaineering culture are palpable.
A particular highlight is the drive down the spectacular Kesselbergstraße to Walchensee – one of Bavaria’s most beautiful and crystal-clear lakes, with a breathtaking mountain panorama. After a short break in the historic spa town of Bad Tölz, the grand finale awaits: Lake Tegernsee, surrounded by majestic Alps – and two outstanding lunch options right on the lakeshore.
Lunch recommendation: Choose between two highlights on Lake Tegernsee: the Herzogliche Bräustüberl Tegernsee, with a beer garden tradition dating back to 1616 and a rustic pub atmosphere – or the Althoff Seehotel Überfahrt, our sister hotel, offering fine gourmet cuisine and a stunning view of the lake.

What is included in the booking?
The booking includes 250 kilometres’ free mileage and insurance with an excess of up to EUR 5,000. You will receive a personal briefing; furthermore, the handover and return take place at the entrance to the AMERON Neuschwanstein Alpsee Resort & Spa. The vehicle must be handed over with a full tank of fuel or a fully charged battery; otherwise, the cost of refuelling or recharging, plus a service charge of 30 euros, will be invoiced.
When will the vehicle be available?
The vehicles are available to you during your stay, subject to availability. We recommend that you book before you arrive to ensure you get the model of your choice.
Who is allowed to use the vehicles?
The “Mercedes-Benz × AMERON Neuschwanstein Resort & Spa” experience is available exclusively to guests staying at the AMERON Neuschwanstein Resort & Spa and is aimed at residents of Germany, Austria and Switzerland. A valid EU driving licence (Category B) held for at least two years is required.
Can I book a vehicle even if I’m not a guest?
No. This offer is exclusively for guests staying overnight at the AMERON Neuschwanstein Alpsee Resort & Spa.
How old do I need to be to book a vehicle?
The minimum age for using the vehicle is 25.

Is there any insurance cover?

What booking periods are available?
There are various time slots available for you to choose from every day. Please note that bookings cannot be made for consecutive days.
Can I cancel the booking?
If you are unable to take your booked ride, please cancel in good time to give other guests the opportunity to have a test ride.
Which routes are permitted for these trips?
You may undertake journeys on all public roads in Germany (Bavaria), Austria (Tyrol, Salzburg) and Italy (South Tyrol) up to a daily distance of 250 kilometres.
